1904 * Cary Grant (Archibald Leach), British film actor who starred in Charade (1938).

1911 Eugene Ely became the first pilot to land his aircraft on a ship.

1912 The ill-fated Scott expedition reached the South Pole, only to discover Amundsen had been there first.

1913 * Danny Kaye, US film actor who starred in Hans Christian Andersen (1952).

1934 The first arrest was made in Britain using pocket radios by policemen.

1936 Rudyard Kipling, the English author of "Jungle Book", died.

1955 * Kevin Costner, US film actor who won an Oscar for his role in Dances with Wolves.

1963 Labour leader Hugh Gaitskell died after a sudden deterioration in his heart condition.

1967 Jeremy Thorpe was elected leader of the Liberal Party.

1967 In Connecticut, Albert DeSalvo, the "Boston Strangler" who says he murdered 13 women, was given a life sentence for assault and armed robbery.

1997 Israel handed over control of the West Bank city to Palestinians as Yasser Arafat returned to Hebron for the first time in 30 years.

2001 President Clinton admitted making false statements under oath about Monica Lewinsky.
