1778 The valve flush toilet was patented by Joseph Bramh.

1832 * Lewis Carrol (Charles Lutwidge Dodgson), author of Alice in Wonderland (1865).

1880 Thomas Edison was granted a patent for his incandescent light.

1924 * Sir Brian Rix, English actor who appeared mainly in farces.

1926 John Logie Baird demonstrated television to the Royal Institute in London.

1943 The USA made their first bombing raid on Germany.

1944 A successful Soviet offensive drove German troops from Leningrad which has been besieged since September 1941.

1945 The Russians liberated Auschwitz concentration camp, where the Nazis had killed over 1.5 million people, including over 1 million Jews.

1951 The U.S. Air Force started atomic testing in the Nevada desert.
