1913 * Percy Thrower, Popular gardener and broadcaster.

1931 * Gene Hackman, US actor who won an Oscar for The French Connection (1971).

1933 Adolf Hitler was appointed Chancellor by German President, von Hindenburg.

1937 * Vanessa Redgrave, English stage and film actress.

1948 Indian leader Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated.
