1536 The city of Buenos Aires, Argentina, was founded by Spanish conquistador Pedro de Mendoza.

1848 The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, ending the Mexican War, was signed. In the treaty, Mexico ceded to the United States a huge portion of what is today the American West and Southwest, including California and New Mexico.

1852 The first 'flushing' men's public toilet was opened in Fleet street, London.

1870 The Cardiff Giant was revealed to be a hoax.

1878 Greece declared war on Turkey.

1882 * James Joyce, Irish novelist who wrote Ulysses in 1922.

1927 * Elaine Stritch, US actress and singer.

1940 * David Jason, British television actor.

1943 The German 6th army surrendered to the Soviets at Stalingrad.

1946 * Farrah Fawcett, US actress who starred in the TV series Charlie's Angels.

1971 Major General Idi Amin declared himself absolute ruler of Uganda.

1979 Sex Pistols' bassist Sid Vicious died of a heroin overdose in New York.

1987 Reports from Lebanon said Terry Waite special envoy for the Archbishop of Canterbury was kidnapped by an Islamic militia group.

1983 In Ireland, a constitutional amendment was introduced, banning abortion.

1989 The USSR's military occupation of Afghanistan ended after 9 years.

1990 FW de Klerk, the President of South Africa lifted the 30-year ban on leading anti-apartheid group the African National Congress.
