1858 Bernadette Soubrois had a vision of the Virgin Mary in a grotto in Lourdes, France, leading to the foundation of the shrine of Lourdes.

1926 * Leslie Nielsen, US actor best known for his role in the TV series Police Squad.

1929 The 109 acres of the Vatican, Rome were made an independent, sovereign state.

1934 * Mary Quant, English fashion designer who played a major role in the 1960's.

1936 * Burt Reynolds, US film and television actor.

1945 Yalta Agreement signed by President Franklin Roosevelt, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and Soviet leader Josef Stalin during World War II.

1956 Spies Guy Burgess and Donald Maclean who vanished in mysterious circumstances five years ago reappeared in the Soviet Union.

1970 Japan became the fourth country to put a satellite into orbit.

1983 Police launched a mass murder investigation in London after discovering human remains in drains. Civil servant Dennis Andrew Nilsen, 37, was later charged with 12 murders and sentenced to six life sentences.

1987 Party planner Cynthia Payne was acquitted of nine charges of controlling prostitutes at her home in south-west London.

1990 After 27 years in prison, Nelson Mandela was released from Robben Island prison South Africa.
