1784 John Wesley issued a "Deed of Declaration" formally establishing the Methodist Church.

1912 Albert Berry made the first parachute jump from a plane over Missouri.

1913 * Vincent Minnelli, US film director who directed Gigi (1958).

1915 * Zero Mostel (Samuel Joel), US comedy actor who starred in The Producers (1967).

1927 The British protectorate of Egypt ended.

1931 * Peter Alliss, German-born English golfer and TV commentator.

1946 * Robin Cook, Labour MP & Shadow Cabinet minister.

1948 The last British troops left India.

1949 * Stephanie Beacham, English television actress.

1959 The first polar orbiting satellite, Discoverer 1, was launched.

1971 Women were refused the right to vote in elections, in Lichtenstein.

1975 A London Underground train crashed at Moorgate, killing the driver and at least 29 passengers.

1986 Olof Palme, the prime minister of Sweden, was shot dead and his wife Lisbeth wounded in central Stockholm.

1991 Kuwait was liberated from Iraqi control by Allied forces during the Gulf War.

2001 Up to 13 were killed and more than 70 injured when a high speed train was hit by a car which careered off the motorway.
