1912 Frenchman Henri Seimet became the first aviator to fly non-stop from Paris to London.

1917 The world's first jazz record, 'The Dixie Jazz Band One-step' was released.

1918 The Bolsheviks changed their name to the Russian Communist Party.

1930 * Lord Snowdon, former husband of Princess Margaret.

1936 Adolf Hitler broke the Treaty of Versailles and the Locarno Pact when he ordered troops to march into the Rhineland.

1945 In the first incursion into Germany by Allied forces US troops crossed the bridge at Remagen.

1952 * Viv Richards, West Indian cricketer.

1958 * Rik Mayall, English alternative comedian who starred in the TV series The Young Ones.

1960 * Ivan Lendl, Czech-born tennis player and winner of numerous Grand Slam events.

1962 A report by the Royal College of Physician's highlighted the dangers of smoking.

1965 American marines landed in South Vietnam.

1969 Golda Meir has been elected as the first female prime minister of Israel.

1975 The body of kidnapped Lesley Whittle, the 17-year-old Shropshire heiress was found.

1989 Iran broke off diplomatic relations with Britain over Salman Rushdie's novel Satanic Verses.
