1781 Sir William Herschel discovered the planet Uranus.

1873 The Scottish Football Association was formed.

1881 Tsar Alexander II of Russia died after a bomb was thrown at him in St Petersburg.

1898 * Henry Hathaway, US film director who directed the film True Grit (1969).

1930 US astronomer Clyde Tombaugh discovered the planet Pluto.

1938 Germany invaded Austria which was made a province named "Ostmark".

1939 * Neil Sedaka, US singer, pianist and songwriter.

1950 * Joe Bugner, Hungarian-born, British heavyweight boxing champion.

1961 Black and white Bank of England five pound notes ceased to be legal tender.

1972 Britain and China resumed full diplomatic relations after 22 years; Britain withdrew its consulate from Taiwan.

1974 The Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris, France opened.

1979 Grenada Prime Minister, Sir Eric Gairy was ousted by coup.

1992 Thousands were killed in eastern Turkey by an earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale.

1996 A man shot dead 16 children and a woman teacher in Dunblane Primary School, Scotland. He then shot himself.

1999 The World Title fight between US champ Evander Holyfield and British heavyweight Lennox Lewis ended in uproar at Madison Square Garden as the fight was declared a draw.
