1858 * Rudolf Diesel, German engineer who pioneered the modern motor car engine.

1869 * Arthur Neville Chamberlain, British Prime Minister from 1937-1940.

1925 The most violent single tornado in U.S. history, the 'Tri-State Tornado,' hit Missouri, Indiana, and Illinois, killing 689 people and injuring 13,000 others.

1931 Electric razors were first manufactured by Schick Incorporated, Stanford, Connecticut.

1932 Sydney Harbour Bridge was opened.

1949 * Alex 'Hurricane' Higgins, Irish snooker player and two-times world champion.

1949 NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) set up with Britain and 7 other countries.

1952 * Pat Eddery, four times champion British jockey.

1965 Soviet cosmonaut Aleksei Leonov made the first spacewalk.
