1931 * Leonard Nimoy, US actor who played Mr. Spock in the TV series Star Trek.

1939 * James Caan, US actor who made his name in the film, The Godfather (1972).

1944 * Diana Ross, US singer who made her name with the Motown group, The Supremes.

1964 The first performance of Funny Girl on Broadway with Barbara Streisand.

1971 East Pakistan proclaimed its independence, taking the name Bangladesh.

1973 Mrs. Susan Shaw became the first woman allowed inside the London Stock Exchange.

1979 Prime Minister Begin (Israel) and President Sadat (Egypt) signed a peace treaty ending 30 years of war.

2000 Vladimir Putin was elected president of Russia.
