1863 * Sir Henry Royce, English engineer who founded Rolls Royce Limited in 1884.

1898 * Gloria Swanson, US actress who starred in the film Sunset Boulevard (1950).

1914 The first successful blood transfusion took place in a Brussels hospital.

1942 * Michael York, English actor who was first seen in the TV series The Forsyte Saga.

1958 Nikita Khrushchev became Soviet premier and first secretary of the Communist Party.

1977 Two jumbo jets collided on the ground at Tenerife airport, killing 574 people the highest ever for an aviation disaster.

1989 The first elections were held for the Soviet parliament.
