1919 * Ian Douglas Smith, Rhodesian Prime Minister who declared independence from Britain.

1944 * Hywel Bennet, Welsh-born actor, best known for the TV series Shelley.

1946 The League of Nations assembled for the last time.

1953 Jomo Kenyatta is sentenced to seven years hard labour for his part in the organisation of the Mau-Mau movement.

1973 The artist Pablo Picasso has died of a heart attack at his chateau near Cannes on the French Riviera.

1990 British golfer Nick Faldo won his second consecutive US Masters title.

1994 The lead-singer of grunge rock band Nirvana, Kurt Cobain, was found dead in his Seattle home. He apparently shot himself.

1995 British-born Nicholas Ingram has been executed in the electric chair in the US after two appeals to the US Supreme Court were turned down.
