1903 In New York, Dr. Harry Plotz discovered the typhus vaccine.

1904 * Sir John Gielgud, English classical actor who won an Oscar for the film Arthur (1981).

1912 Titanic hit the iceberg that would sink her the next morning.

1925 * Rod Steiger, US actor who won an Oscar for the film In the Heat of the Night (1967).

1931 The British Ministry of Transport issued the Highway Code.

1940 * Julie Christie, English actress who won an Oscar for the film Darling (1965).

1945 * Steve Martin, US comedian and film actor.

1950 British comic strip hero Dan Dare made his first appearance in the comic strip Eagle.

1968 A massive student rally in West Berlin ended in violent clashes between police and protesters.

1969 In a record breaking night at the Academy Awards, a tie between Katherine Hepburn and Barbra Streisand resulted in the two sharing the the Best Actress Oscar and Hepburn broke the record as the only actress to win three Best Actress Oscars.

1970 An explosion on board Apollo 13 caused one of the most critical situations in American space history.

1979 Driven into exile by former Uganda dictator Idi Amin has been sworn in as the country's new president. Yusufu Lule was greeted by cheering crowds when he arrived back in Uganda yesterday from neighbouring Tanzania

2000 A man who carried out a "road rage" killing on the M25 received a life sentence after being convicted of murder at the Old Bailey in London.

2002 Hugo Chávez returned as president of Venezuela after being forced out of office two days previously.
