1901 * Emperor Hirohito of Japan who became emperor in 1926.

1913 The zipper that zipped was patented by Swedish engineer Gideon Sundback.

1935 'Cats eyes' were used on British roads for the first time.

1957 * Daniel Day Lewis, Irish film actor.

1957 * Michelle Pfeiffer, US film actress.

1958 The Broadway musical, My Fair Lady, opened for its first night in London to a rapturous reception.

1967 Muhammad Ali stripped of the heavyweight title after refusing the draft to the US Army.

1978: Afghan coup rebels claimed victory announcing that almost all the leaders of the ousted Daoud regime are dead.

1978 Japan's Naomi Uemura, travelling by sled dog, became the first person to reach the North Pole alone.

1980 Film director Alfred Hitchcock died at age of 80.

1981 Peter Sutcliffe admitted he was the Yorkshire Ripper, killing 13 women in Britain.

1986 The Duchess of Windsor, Wallis Simpson, was laid to rest alongside her husband, the abdicated King Edward VIII, at Frogmore in Windsor.

1992 Fierce rioting broke out in Los Angeles following the acquittal of four white police officers accused of beating black motorist Rodney King.
