1916 * Glenn Ford, Canadian-born US film actor who starred in The Blackboard Jungle (1955).

1931 The Empire State Building opened in New York City. At 102 stories, it was the world's tallest building for the next 41 years.

1937 * Una Stubbs, English actress and dancer.

1939 Batman, creation of artist Bob Kane made his debut in issue 12 of Detective Comics.

1941 Orson Welles's Citizen Kane, considered by many the greatest film ever made, premiered in New York.

1945 The German Army in Italy surrendered to the Allies.

1945 Germany announced Hitler the German Fuhrer was killed in the Reich Chancery of Berlin fighting the Soviets, according to German radio.

1946 * Joanna Lumley, English actress who made her name in the TV series The New Avengers.

1948 The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea) was established with Kim Il Sung as president.

1960 The USSR shot down the US U2 pilot Gary Powers who was jailed for 10 years.

1960 * Steve Cauthen, record-breaking US jockey.

1961 Fidel Castro declared Cuba a socialist nation and banned elections saying, "The revolution has no time for elections."

1967 Elvis Presley married Priscilla Beaulieu. They divorced in 1973.

1973 More than a million workers join a one-day strike in protest of the pay restraint policy and price rises by the Conservative government under Edward Heath.

1982 British planes attack two airstrips near Port Stanley, the capital of the Falkland Islands in the war to rid the islands of Argentine forces

1994 The world-class Brazilian racing driver Ayrton Senna died in a crash at the San Marino Grand Prix in Italy.

2000 May Day violence erupted on London streets when hundreds of anti-capitalist demonstrators fight running battles with police. The Cenotaph and statue of Winston Churchill were defaced with graffiti.
