1865 The first train robbery took place, near North Bend, Ohio.

1891 Carnegie Hall (then known as Music Hall) opened in New York City. Peter Tchaikovsky was the guest conductor.

1904 * Sir Gordan Richards, English jockey who rode 4,500 winners from 1925-1952.

1913 * Tyrone Power, US actor who starred in the film The Mark of Zorro (1940).

1943 * Michael Palin, English comedian and writer and member of the Monty Python team.

1955 World-famous American virologist Dr Jonas Salk promoted the polio vaccination in London.

1961 Commander Alan Shepard returned to Earth and was recovered from his Mercury 3 capsule in the Atlantic after becoming the first American in space.

1980 The SAS stormed the Iranian Embassy in London freeing 19 hostages, killing 4 gunmen.

1981 Bobby Sands of the IRA died in a prison hospital on the 66th day of his hunger strike.

2000 Conjunction of the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn.

2001 Britain's tourist industry hoped the bank holiday weekend and good weather will attract visitors back to areas previously closed due to foot-and-mouth disease.
