1588 The Spanish Armada (130 vessels) set sail from Lisbon to invade England.

1738 * Joseph Ignace Guillotin, French revolutionary who suggested a decapitating machine.

1759 * William Pitt the Younger, English Prime Minister from 1783-1801 and 1804-1806.

1858 Tonic Water was patented by Erasmus Bond of London.

1918 * Thora Hird, English actress and TV presenter.

1934 The Dionne quintuplets were born in Ontario, Canada.

1951 Princess Elizabeth opens the Exhibition of Industrial Power in Glasgow, the latest show in the Festival of Britain.

1959 Two monkeys become the first living creatures to survive a space flight. Able and Baker, were fired 300 miles into space in a Jupiter missile AM-18 from Cape Canaveral in Florida. The flight lasted 15 minutes.

1967 Sir Francis Chichester arrived back in Plymouth in his yacht Gipsy Moth IV, after completing his voyage around the world.

1968 * Kylie Minogue, Australian actress and singer.

1974 Northern Ireland's first power-sharing assembly collapsed after its leader Brian Faulkner steps down faced with rising opposition.


1987 Mathias Rust, a 19 year-old West German, landed his light aircraft in Red Square, Russia.

1990 The first ever all woman crew completed the Whitbread around-the-world yacht race.

1997 Linda Finch completed Amelia Earhart's attempted around-the-world flight.

1998 World fury as Pakistan explodes five underground nuclear devices in response to India's nuclear tests two weeks earlier.
