1902 * Sir Leonard Huxley, English scientist who developed radar.

1903 * Bob Hope, English-born US actor who starred in the 'Road' films with Bing Crosby.

1917 * John Fitzgerald Kennedy, the 35th US President.

1939 * Nanette Newman, English stage and film actress.

1942 Bing Crosby recorded his version of 'White Christmas.' It would go on to sell over 30 million copies.

1953 New Zealander Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay become the first to conquer the summit of Mount Everest.

1972 Three Japanese gunmen open fire at Lod International Airport Tel Aviv in Israel, killing 26 people and injuring dozens more.

1982 Pope John Paul II became the first Pope in 450 years to set foot on English soil.

1984 Miners and police clashed at Orgreave and the police use riot gear for the first time since the miners' strike began as they face the biggest picket to date.

1985 Thirty nine Juventus fans died during rioting at the European Cup Final between Liverpool and Juventus in the Heysel stadium Brussels.
