1910 * Sir Christopher Cockerell, English inventor of the hovercraft in 1953.

1927 * Geoffrey Palmer, English actor who starred in the TV series Butterflies.

1937 The first supermarket trolleys were used in an Oklahoma supermarket.

1940 As the last Allied soldier was rescued from Dunkirk, the British Prime Minister defiantly vowed his forces "shall never surrender".

1944 Rome, Italy was liberated by the Allies.

1946 Juan Perón became President of Argentina.

1968 In a three-day annual event which began in 1960 when Dover's Chamber of Commerce decided to tackle complaints. Dover residents attempt to get rid of the gull "flying rats" menace in a drive to create a cleaner, quieter resort.

1977 Five British plane-spotters imprisoned in Greece for spying were released after spending 10 weeks in jail.

1989 Tanks rolled into Tiananmen Square, Beijing as soldiers fired on peaceful demonstrators killing several hundred people.

1991 Defence Secretary Tom King confirmed Britain will reduce the amount it spends on the army.

2001 King Dipendra of Nepal died, three days after shooting most of his family and himself.
