1770 Capt. James Cook discovered the Great Barrier Reef off Australia.

1776 * John Constable, English landscape painter of the Hay Wain (1821).

1864 * Richard Strauss, German composer of the opera Salome (1905).

1935 * Gene Wilder, US actor who starred in the film The Producers (1968).

1939 * Jackie Stewart, (Scotland) three times world Formula 1 motor racing champion.

1940 Fascist dictator Benito Mussolini declared war on the Allies.

1955 Seventy-seven people have been killed and 77 others injured when a racing car spun off the track and into the crowd at Le Mans in north-west France.

1968 French student rebel leader Daniel Cohn-Bendit a German citizen arrived in Britain stirring up fears of campus unrest. As the ringleader of the French student demonstrations he was expelled from France on 21 May

1976 The trial of 13 mercenaries 10 of them British began in Angola. The trial ended with 3 Britons and an American sentenced to death by firing squad for their part in the murders of fellow mercenaries. They were executed on 10 July.

1981 The musical Barnum opened at the London Palladium.

1998 More than a million people in Sudan faced starvation, prompting the United Nations to declare an official famine in the region.

2001 Convicted Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh is executed.
