1797 During the battle off Santa Cruz, Admiral Nelson was shot in the right arm.

1867 General Custer's last stand took place at Little Bighorn, Montana, in the US. He was killed with all his men.

1900 * Louis (Francis Albert Victor), 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma.

1903 Marie Curie presented her thesis in Paris announcing the discovery of radium.

1903 * George Orwell (Eric Blair), English novelist of Animal Farm (1945) and 1984 (1949).

1945 * Carly Simon, US singer and songwriter of the hit 'You're So Vain' (1973).

1950 Communist North Korean troops invaded South Korea, beginning the Korean War.

1951 The first commercial colour TV program was transmitted by CBS from New York to Baltimore, Philadelphia, Boston, and Washington, DC.

1953 John Christie was sentenced to hang for murdering his wife and then hiding her body under the floorboards of their Notting Hill home in London.

1963 * George Michael (Panos), English pop singer, and former member of the group Wham.

1985 Thirteen people have been arrested in connection with a suspected IRA mainland bombing campaign.

1991 Slovenia and Croatia declared their independence from Yugoslavia. Beginning the Yugoslavian civil war.

1997 Oceanographer Jacques Cousteau died.

2001 Race violence erupted in Burnley. white and Asian youths were involved in a series of overnight attacks on pubs, shops and restaurants. Many vehicles were also damaged or destroyed.
