1509 * John Calvin, French theologian and a leading Protestant reformer.

1900 The Paris Metro opened.

1917 * Reg Symthe, English cartoonist who created the Andy Capp cartoon strip.

1940 The Luftwaffe, attacked shipping convoys off the south-east coast of England at the start of the battle to save Britain from invasion.

1943 Western Allies invaded Sicily. Virtually unopposed, British, Canadian and American troops landed on the Mediterranean island of Sicily.

1943 * Arthur Ashe, US tennis star, the first black Wimbledon tennis champion in 1975.

1949 * Sunil Gavaskar, former Indian cricket captain and leading run scorer.

1951 Beginning of the Armistice talks at Kaesong, to end the Korean War.

1958 The first parking meters in Britain were installed in Mayfair.

1962 The first communications satellite, Telstar 1 was launched.

1972 The Secretary of State for Northern Ireland William Whitelaw was involved in secret talks with the provisional IRA in London.

1976 The Italian town of Sveso covered by a poisonous cloud from a local chemical plant.

1985 The Greenpeace flagship Rainbow Warrior was blown up in Auckland harbour, New Zealand.

1991 President Bush lifted economic sanctions against South Africa.

1991 Boris Yeltsin was sworn in as Russia's first elected president.

2003 Spain opened its first mosque (in Granada) since the Moors were expelled in 1492.
