1776 Captain Cook set off from Plymouth on his third and final voyage of exploration.

1915 * Yul Brynner, US actor born in Siberia who starred in the film The Magnificent 7 (1960).

1953 * Leon Spinks, US boxer who defeated Muhammad Ali in 1978 for the heavyweight crown.

1975 China's great terracotta army uncovered near the ancient Chinese capital of Xian.

1977 The Rev. Dr. Martin luther King Jr. was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his work to advance civil rights.

1977 The Gay News and its editor was found guilty of blasphemous libel in the first case of its kind for more than fifty years.

1979 The US space station Skylab returned to earth after six years in space. Debris was scattered across the southern Indian Ocean and the sparsely populated Australian desert.
