1898 Spain surrendered to the United States at Santiago, Cuba, ending the Spanish-American War.

1899 * James Cagney, US tough-guy actor who starred in The Public Enemy (1931).

1935 * Donald Sutherland, Canadian actor who starred in the film The Eagle Has Landed (1976).

1917 The British royal family changed their name from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to Windsor.

1938 He took off from New York aiming for California and landed in Ireland. 'Wrong Way Corrigan' Accidental Aviator.

1948 * Wayne Sleep, English ballet dancer and actor.

1952 * David Hasselhoff, US TV actor who starred in the TV series Knight Rider.

1955 Stirling Moss won the British Grand Prix at the Aintree track near Liverpool - the first time an Englishman had triumphed in the race.

1955 Disneyland opened in Anaheim, California.

1974: Bomb blast at the Tower of London left one person dead and 41 injured.

1975 The American Apollo and Soviet Soyuz spacecraft linked up for the first time.

1996 Flight TWA 800 exploded in mid-air after take off from JFK Airport with a loss of 228 lives.

1998 The last Russian Czar Nicholas II was buried 80 years after he and his family were executed by the Bolsheviks.
