0064 A great fire began that ultimately destroyed most of Rome. The emperor Nero blamed it on Christians and began the first Roman persecution of them.

1877 Thomas Edison carried out his first experiments on recording the human voice.

1918 * Nelson Mandela, South African leader of the African National Congress (ANC).

1921 * John Glenn, the first US astronaut to orbit the Earth on the 20/2/1962.

1925 Mein Kampf (My Struggle) which Adolf Hitler wrote while in jail was published.

1936 The Spanish Civil War began and would last for three years.

1950 * Richard Branson, English entrepreneur and managing director of the Virgin group.

1957 * Nick Faldo, English golfer and twice winner of the US Masters (1989-1990).

1966 US police charged a seaman with the murder of eight student nurses in their hostel in Chicago.

1976 14 year old Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci earned the first perfect score. A ten, at the Olympics, going on to score six more tens and win three gold medals.

1981 Nearly 200 people were hospitalised in Dublin after a hunger strike demonstration turned violent.

1990 Two teenage girls from the Midlands were arrested for drug smuggling in Thailand.

2003 A body believed to be that of government scientist Dr David Kelly the missing Iraq expert, was found in Oxfordshire.
