1928 * Jimmy Hill, former English soccer player and television commentator.

1933 US aviator Wiley Post became the first person to fly solo around the world.

1934 US bank robber John Dillinger was gunned down by FBI officers in Chicago.

1946 Bread rationing began in Britain.

1972 The Russian unmanned spacecraft Venera 8 landed on the planet Venus.

1977 The disgraced deputy Prime Minister of China, Deng Xiaoping, returned to Chinese Government.
