1913 Stainless steel was first cast in Sheffield, Britain by Harry Brearley.

1924 * Jim Reeves, US country and western singer.

1940 Leon Trotsky, Bolshevik leader exiled by Stalin was found murdered in Mexico.

1948 * Robert Plant, US rock singer.

1956 Nuclear power was generated in Britain for the first time at Calder Hall power station.

1968 Russian troops invaded Czechoslovakia.

1970 The England soccer captain, Bobby Moore, was cleared of charges of stealing in a trial in Colombia.

1978 Two people died during an attack on a bus carrying Israeli airline staff in central London.

1980 Italian Reinhold Messner made the first successful solo ascent of Mount Everest and without oxygen.

1989 At least 30 people died after a pleasure cruiser "the Marchioness" and a barge collided on the River Thames.
