1930 * Princess Margaret Rose, younger sister of Queen Elizabeth II.

1933 * Dame Janet Baker, English opera singer.

1933 * Barry Norman, English broadcaster and reviewer of films.

1940 Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky died in Mexico City.

1959 Hawaii became the 50th state of the Union.
