1828 * Count Leo Tolstoy, Russian author of the novel War and Peace (1863-1869).

1850 Richard Wagner's opera, Lohengrin, premiered at Weimar, Germany.

1922 The first commercial to be broadcast on radio aired on station WEAF in New York City. The ten minute advertisement for the Queensboro Realty Company cost $100.

1930 * Windsor Davis, Welsh actor who starred in the TV series It Ain't Half Hot Mum.

1933 The BBC was used for the first time by police to help track down a wanted man.

1944 * David Soul, US actor who starred in the TV series Starsky and Hutch.

1947 * Emlyn Hughes, Welsh soccer player who played for Liverpool and represented England.

1963 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his famous 'I Have a Dream' speech at the Lincoln Memorial to civil rights demonstrators.

1972 Prince William of Gloucester was killed after his light aircraft crashed and burst into flames near Wolverhampton.

1985 An East German couple Reinhard and Sonja Schulze appeared before Horseferry Road magistrates court in London charged with espionage under the Official Secrets Act.

1988 3 Italian air force aerobatic jets crashed into a crowd in Ramstein, Germany killing 30.

1999 The Mir space station bids farewell to its last crew members after more than 77,000 orbits.

2003 The Prime Minister, Tony Blair, appeared before the Hutton inquiry inquiry into the death of weapons expert Dr David Kelly.

2004 In Athens, British athlete Kelly Holmes secured a place in Olympic history by winning the 1500m following her 800m gold medal.
