1925 * Russ Conway, English pianist and entertainer.

1942 The German SS destroyed the Warsaw Ghetto leaving 50,000 dead.

1945 General MacArthur accepted the Japanese surrender aboard the aircraft carrier Missouri.

1945 Ho Chi Minh declared Vietnam an independent republic.

1952 * Jimmy Connors, US tennis player and winner of numerous Grand Slam events.

1979 Police discovered the body of a young woman - thought to be the 12th victim of the "Yorkshire Ripper"

1984 A 14-year-old girl and six bikers were killed in a gun battle between rival gangs in a suburb of Sydney, Australia.

1994 Entertainer and television presenter Roy Castle died from cancer at his Buckinghamshire home.
