1878 Cleopatra's Needle, the 69ft. tall obelisk was erected on London's Thames embankment.

1888 * Maurice Chevalier, French entertainer and actor.

1910 The Los Angeles Police Department appointed the world's first woman police officer.

1913 * Jesse Owens, US athlete who won 4 gold medals at the Berlin Olympics (1936).

1931 * Ian Holm, English actor who starred in the film Alien (1979).

1941 * Linda Gray, US actress who starred in the TV soap opera Dallas.

1953 John F. Kennedy married Jacqueline Lee Bouvier in Newport, Rhode Island.

1959 A massive Russian rocket, carrying 860lb of scientific instruments, was successfully launched at the Moon.

1970 Palestinian militants blew up the three planes they had been holding at an airfield in the Jordanian desert.

1977 Steve Biko, South African Black Consciousness movement leader died in police custody.

1997 Scotland voted decisively for home rule in a referendum on how they want the country to be governed.

1999 Indonesia announced it would allow an international peacekeeping force to restore order to East Timor.

2003 One of the great legends of country music, Johnny Cash, died after a short illness.

2005 England won the Ashes from Australia for the first time since 1987 after the "best ever" series.
