1893 New Zealand granted women citizens the right to vote.

1911 * Sir William Golding, English author of The Lord of the Flies (1954).

1933 * David McCallum, Scottish-born actor who starred in the TV series The Man from UNCLE.

1948 * Jeremy Irons, English actor who starred in The French Lieutenant's Woman (1981).

1949 * Twiggy (Lesley Hornby), English actress, singer and model.

1952 The United States prevented film legend Charlie Chaplin from returning to Hollywood until he was investigated by the Immigration Services.

1955 Argentinean leader Juan Perón was overthrown by the military and exiled to Paraguay.

1957 The United States conducted its first underground nuclear test in the Nevada desert.

1970 T-Rex headlined the first Glastonbury rock music festival

1972 A diplomat at the Israeli embassy in London was killed by a letter bomb.

1985 The Mexico City area was struck by the first of two devastating earthquakes that claimed thousands of lives. The second earthquake hit 36 hours later.
