1745 Bonnie Prince Charlie defeated the English at the Battle of Prestonpans in Scotland.

1792 The French National Convention voted to abolish the monarchy.

1756 * John Loudon McAdam, Scottish inventor of the macadam road surface.

1866 * H.G. Wells, English science fiction author who wrote War of the Worlds (1898).

1874 * Gustav Holst, composer of the suite The Planets (1918).

1915 Stonehenge was sold to a Mr. Chubb who then presented it to the nation.

1931 * Larry Hagman, US actor who played JR Ewing in the TV series Dallas.

1937 The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkein was first published.

1949 The People's Republic of China was proclaimed.

1955 Britain annexed "Rockall" 300 miles west of Scotland to stop the Soviets spying on missile tests.

1964 Malta gained its independence from Great Britain.

1979 An RAF Harrier jump jet crashed onto houses in Wisbech, killing two men and a young boy.

1981 Belize gained its independence from Great Britain.

1989 Hurricane Hugo lashed the Atlantic coast state of Georgia causing widespread damage.
