1921 * Deborah Kerr, Scottish-born actress who starred in the film The King and I (1956).

1929 British chemist Alexander Fleming announced his discovery of Penicillin.

1929 The first rocket-powered aircraft invented by Franz von Opel made its maiden flight.

1931 * Angie Dickinson, US actress who starred in the TV series Police Woman.

1935 * Johnny Mathis, US ballad singer.

1938 The British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain was hailed as bringing "peace to Europe" after signing a pact with Germany.
