1895 * Buster Keaton, US comedy actor and screenwriter who starred in The General (1927).

1905 Orville Wright became the first person to fly an aircraft.

1924 * Charlton Heston (Charles Carter), US actor who won an Oscar for the film Ben Hur (1959).

1930 * Sir Terence Conran, British fashion designer.

1946 * Susan Sarandon, US film actress.

1957 The first orbiting satellite Sputnik 1 was launched by the USSR.

1958 BOAC began the world's first passenger carrying jet service.

1965 The BBC announced it will begin broadcasting a new programme for Asian immigrants.

1976 British Rail began its new 125mph Intercity 'High Speed Train' service.

1983 Englishman Richard Noble broke the land speed record in Thrust 2 (663 mph).

1992 An Israeli Boeing 747 cargo plane crashed in the outskirts of Amsterdam killing dozens of people.

1993 At least five US soldiers died and two Blackhawk helicopters were shot down in a fire fight with Mogadishu warlords in Mogadishu Somalia.
