1910 * Barbara Castle, British Labour Party politician.

1927 Al Jolson starred in the first full length film to make use of sound, The Jazz Singer.

1928 Chang Kai-shek became President of China.

1930 * Richie Benaud, former Australian cricket captain and television commentator.

1939 * Melvyn Bragg, English author and television producer and presenter.

1953 Britain sent troops to Guiana in order to preserve the peace.

1973 The Yom Kippur War began when Syria and Egypt attacked Israel.

1981 Egyptian Prime Minister Anwar Sadat was assassinated in Cairo.

1985 A police officer was stabbed to death by a mob during riots at the Broadwater Farm housing estate in North London.

1986 Fears were growing for the missing nuclear technician Mordechai Vanunu who disappeared in London after revealing details of Israel's nuclear weapons programme.

1989 Bette Davis died in France at age 81.
