1825 The Erie Canal, connecting Lake Erie to the Hudson River, opened.

1860 Giuseppe Garibaldi proclaimed Victor Emmanuel King of Italy.

1863 Under the leadership of Jean Henri Dunant, the International Committee for Relief to the Wounded, now known as the International Movement of the Red Cross and the Red Crescent, convened at a conference in Geneva, Switzerland.

1879 * Leon Trotsky, Communist leader who with Lenin, organized the October Revolution.

1881 The gunfight at O.K. Corral took place outside Tombstone, Arizona.

1905 Sweden and Norway ended their Union and the Norwegian king, Oscar II, abdicated.

1916 * François Mitterand, founder of the French Socialist Party.

1942 * Bob Hoskins, English actor who starred in the film Who Framed Roger Rabbit? (1988).

1948 * Hillary Rodham Clinton, wife and First Lady to US President Bill Clinton.

1951 Winston Churchill's Conservatives defeated Labour in the general election.

1956 The Hungarian Prime Minister, Imre Nagy, appealed for calm as demonstrators battled with Soviet troops.

1959 The Soviet Union revealed the first pictures of the far side of the Moon taken from Lunik 3.

1975 Anwar Sadat became the first Egyptian president to pay an official visit to the United States.

1979 The President of South Korea, Park Chung Hee, was "accidentally" shot dead by the chief of his intelligence service, Kim Jea Kyu.

1994 Israel's Yitzhak Rabin and Jordan's King Hussein signed the Israel-Jordan Peace Treaty.
