1935 * Michael Winner, English film producer and director of the Death Wish movies.

1938 Orson Welles radio production of War of the Worlds caused panic in the US.

1945 * Henry Winkler, US actor who played the Fonz in the TV series Happy Days.

1953 US Gen. George C Marshall won the Nobel Peace Prize for originating the Marshall Plan.

1984 Father Jerzy Popieluszko, an outspoken supporter of Poland's banned trade union, was found dead
