1755 Earthquake and a tsunami destroyed Lisbon and claiming over 50,000 lives.

1887 * L.S. Lowry, English painter of distinctive 'matchstick' characters.

1915 * Michael Denison, English actor who starred in The Importance of Being Earnest (1952).

1935 * Gary Player, South African golf player and winner of all 4 of the major championships.

1956 Premium Bonds went on sale in Britain for the first time.

1961 The body of Stalin was removed from Lenin's Mausoleum in Red Square.

1962 * Sharon Davies, English Olympic swimmer.

1966 At least eight people were killed including an American officer when Viet Cong artillery shelled Saigon.

1970 A fire at a nightclub in St Laurent du Pont, near Grenoble, France killed 142 people, most of them teenagers.
