1880 Australian bank robber Ned Kelly was hanged at Melbourne Jail.

1885 * George Smith Patton, US general who led US troops in North Africa in World War 2.

1918 * Stubby Kaye, US actor and singer who appeared in the film Cat Ballou (1965).

1918 The Armistice was signed by the Allies and Germany to end World War 1.

1954 Thousands of elderly people took part in a rally in London calling for an increase in their pensions.

1962 * Demi Moore, US film actress.

1965 Ian Smith's Rhodesia government declared independence from Britain.

1975 The southern African state of Angola gained its independence from Portugal.

1987 A painting by Vincent Van Gogh was sold for $49m (27m) - a world record for a work of art.

1992 The General Synod of the Church of England approved the ordination of women priests.

2000 At least 150 skiers, many of them children, died in an intense fire on board a funicular railway in the Austrian Alps.
