1942 * Willie Carson, Scottish-born jockey who was five-time English champion jockey.

1953 * Griff Rhys Jones, British comedy actor and writer.

1959 The Sound of Music was performed for the first time on Broadway.

1960 Gilbert Harding, the TV personality with a reputation for outspokenness died.

1961 * Frank Bruno, English heavyweight boxer.

1965 The USSR launched the Venus III unmanned spacecraft that eventually landed on Venus.

1976 Seven men who took part in an 8m bank robbery on the Bank of America in Mayfair, London, received jail terms totalling nearly 100 years.

1979 Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher named Sir Anthony Blunt, a former security service officer, as the "fourth man" in the Philby affair.
