1917 * Indira Gandhi, Prime Minister of India from 1966-77 and 1980-84.

1942 * Calvin Klein, American fashion designer.

1960 The first vertical take-off aircraft (British Hawkley Siddley) flew for the first time.

1963 * Jodie Foster, US film actress who starred in the film The Accused (1988).

1967 The Prime Minister, Harold Wilson, stood by his decision to devalue the pound.
