1783 In France, Pilātre de Rozier and the Marquis d'Arlandes to became the first people to take part in a manned balloon flight. The two men travelled 7 miles.

1789 North Carolina became the 12th US state.

1831 Michael Faraday gave his first lecture at the Royal Society in London.

1843 Thomas Hancock patented vulcanized rubber.

1888 * Harpo Marx, US comedian and second-eldest of the Marx Brothers.

1922 * Telly (Aristotle) Savalas, US actor best known for his starring role in the TV series Kojak.

1941 * Juliet Mills, English stage and film actress.

1945 * Goldie Hawn, US actress who starred in the film Private Benjamin (1980).

1953 The Skull of Piltdown Man, long believed to be the missing link, was proved to be a hoax.

1967 The number of animals slaughtered in the foot-and-mouth reached a record high of 134,000.

1974 Two bombs explode in central Birmingham pubs, killing 19 and injuring over 180.

1979 A mob in the Pakistani capital Islamabad burned the US Embassy to the ground killing a US marine.

1985 The Geneva summit between the US and the Soviet Union ended with no agreement on the "Star Wars" space defence system.

1990 Leaders of NATO and the Warsaw Pact signed the Charter of Paris ending the Cold War.

1991 Egypt's Boutros Boutros-Ghali was appointed secretary-general by the UN Security Council.

1995: Balkan leaders agree to peace settlement for Bosnia Herzegovina, to be enforced by 60,000 Nato troops.
